Last Christmas back at Number 1

Wham! have returned to Number 1 in the UK for the second time this year with Last Christmas.

Despite missing out on last week’s coveted Official Christmas Number 1 single to LadBaby’s Food Aid, Andrew Ridgeley and the late, great George Michael have performed a fantastic rebound, with their Christmas classic now the last Number 1 single of 2022.

Last Christmas rockets back to the top spot with over 79,000 combined chart units. It is also once again the UK’s most-streamed track of the week (18 million streams).

Last Christmas returns to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in UK

Wham! have returned to Number 1 in the UK with their classic track Last Christmas.

Andrew Ridgeley and the late, great George Michael once again reach the summit of the Official Singles Chart, boasting 11.4 million streams, making Last Christmas the most-streamed in the UK this week.

Originally released in 1984, Last Christmas once held the record for the best-selling single never to have hit Number 1 in the UK; famously kept at Number 2 by Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? it first went to Number 1 on New Year’s Day 2021, at the time breaking a chart record for the longest time a track has taken to top the Singles Chart.

This is Last Christmas’s second stint at Number 1, and Wham!’s fifth Number 1 single overall.

Last Christmas finally reaches Number 1 and sets Official UK Chart record

Wham!’s Last Christmas has topped the UK singles chart for the first time, 36 years after it was first released.

The track was streamed 9.2 million times over the last week. First released in December 1984, Last Christmas was famously held off the top spot by Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Celebrating the news, Andrew Ridgeley paid tribute to George Michael:

Previously, Last Christmas was the UK’s best-selling single to never reach Number 1, accumulating 1.9 million pure sales to date across its lifetime.

That title is now handed over to Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger ft. Christina Aguilera (1.55m pure sales), a Number 2 hit in 2011.

But Last Christmas does now hold a new chart record – for the longest time taken for a single to reach number one.

The previous record-holder was Tony Christie’s (Is This The Way To) Amarillo? which had a 34-year gap between its original release and topping the chart for Comic Relief in 2005.
